Haunted Places in Austria

Although celebrating Halloween is strongly associated with religion as well as ancient customs and traditions, many of us love it for entirely different reasons. Aside from all the costume parties, bonfires in the woods, scary pranks, and other events that scare but a few people, there are other events to attend. One of them is to experience genuine fear by visiting haunted places. These cursed destinations are said to have been possessed by ghosts and lost souls. People have often witnessed strange things happening, such as glowing orbs moving in patterns, ghosts appearing out of nowhere, disappearing instantaneously, etc. The following are considered some of the most haunted locations in Europe.

Pinzgauer Bundesstrasse, Salzburg

Allegedly, a woman in black haunts these streets by stopping car drivers late at night, asking for a ride. Some have picked her up and were told that if they hadn’t stopped, they’d experience terrible accidents. It is supposedly the ghost of a 23-year-old waitress who died in a horrific train accident years ago. The police stated that she didn’t die fast, as she had experienced terrible pain and agony before her final breath.

Situated at more than 500 meters above sea level, the castle has been attacked by both Ottoman and Hungarian armies back in the 15th century. Every once in a while, the ghost of the castle’s Lady Catalina Frescobaldi shows up. Back a century ago, she supposedly appeared on a photograph taken in the castle, in a form of a pale woman. She was buried alive after her husband found out she was cheating on him, so now she seeks revenge for experiencing a horrifying punishment.

This castle is unique in so many ways. Firstly, it’s built on top of an inactive volcano in Riegersburg. Secondly, it exists as far back as the 14th century. Lastly, there are some weird things going on in there. In one of the castle’s rooms, the bed sheets are always messy in the morning, even after the room maid had it made. They even poured white flour on the floor all around the bed and left it like that during the night, hoping to find some tracks. They were shocked once they saw no footprints, yet the bed sheets were messy again. Think this won’t scare you? Try it around Halloween.
